Why do I need a battery balancer?

 

On 24V and 48V solar system using AGM/Gel batteries, two or four 12V batteries is connected in series. The inverter and/or chargers will charge the battery bank to a given charge and float voltage. Over time, some batteries in the series connection may become over charged while the other batteries may become under charged. The sum of battery voltages may still be correct according to what the inverter/charger measures over the positive and negative battery terminals/cables.  Over time, the under-charged battery will be damaged by sulphation and the over-charged battery will be damaged by evaporation (dry cells). 

 

How does it work?

The balancer monitors two batteries. If the total voltage over two batteries is above 27.3V it will start to actively monitor the voltage difference between the two batteries. If one battery differs more than 0.1V from the other, it will draw up to 1000 mA from the higher voltage battery which will allow the lower voltage battery to charge more.
