What Size Solar Geyser Do I Need?
Short answer: allow about 50 litres of hot water per person per day. That works out to a 100L solar geyser for 1–2 people, 150L for 3 people and 200L for 4–5 people.
Solar geyser size by household
| People | Hot water a day | Geyser size |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | about 100L | 100L |
| 3 | about 150L | 150L |
| 4–5 | about 200–250L | 200L |
| 6 or more | 300L+ | Ask us; two geysers or a larger system |
When to go one size up
- Long showers, a bath every day or teenagers in the house.
- Everyone showers in the evening or early morning.
- You live in a cold area or want hot water to last through cloudy days.
Low pressure or a retrofit kit?
- Low-pressure solar geysers are gravity-fed, simple and affordable. They suit farms, holiday homes and houses with low-pressure plumbing. See our low-pressure solar geysers.
- Retrofit manifold kits turn your existing high-pressure electric geyser into a solar geyser without replacing the tank. Size the kit by your geyser: more tubes for bigger geysers. See our retrofit kits.
Do I still need an element?
Yes, a small backup element covers long cloudy spells. On sunny days the sun does the work, so the element hardly runs. A smart controller such as the SR609C only switches the element on when the water is too cold.
